How to repair pitted concrete kitchen countertops?

I moved here 4 yrs ago. The kitchen already had concrete countertops which I like in many ways; since then small "pitted holes" have starting occurring which look like they go through the top surface. Most are pinhead size but a few are a little larger. How do I repair and clean and polish the tops? It seems it stains very easily.
