what is a stipples ceiling hole?

If the hole is more than 1 ' in diameter patch it as you would any other hole. Then take a scrub brush (like you would use to scrub your floor-bristles about 1 " long) and tap it into the top of your sheetrock mud. Then gently dab the area you need to match. It might take several days because you need to let the mud dry between applications. If the hole is less than 1" in diameter stuff some newspaper into the hole then stipple with scrub brush as above.

Forgot to add that new mud will be slightly different colour. After completely dry 2-3 days you may use spray paint to match colour. This is especially an issue if you have smokers in the house.

If the hole is big enough to need strips you have two choices: Cut out area back to closest rafters. 2) Square up hole to be neater. Cut lightweight strips long enough to extend 3-4 inches beyond the hole on each side. Apply glue to strips and fit the patch in place. You won't be able to nail it but it should hold in place. Use the mud and tape like usual finish up. Let dry and paint. A strong form of glue is E6000 normally used for crafting and jewelry.
