You can buy products for septic tanks or use yeast (like you would use to bake bread) or brewers yeast (my mother would empty a bottle of beer into the toilet every so often. You basically need to keep the bacteria live and active.

We've always used Rid-X monthly, and never a problem. Also, avoid bleach and other chemicals that will destroy the Rid-X from going down the drains.
RidX about once a month will keep it working like new.
Flush contents of yeast packet in toilet. Depending on size of septic tank may need more often, 2 0r 3 times a year works for me.
