Open kitchen drain home remedys

I use a tiny hand plunger I got at Home Depot, but you need another person to help close off any other openings when you plunge. Also a bunch of baking soda down the drain and pour in vinegar. Use that before and after you plunge to help loosen up the clog and clean it out. Worst case, you'll need a snake, but I never have needed one.

I always use the baking soda/vinegar and follow with boiling water to rinse down the gunk first. A plunger could just move the clog down the pipes farther. If you have a double sink, do both sides at once. I use between a quarter to half a cup of baking soda and about a cup or so of vinegar, depending on if the drain is clogged or just slow. It may take a couple of tries. I usually use about a gallon of boiling water and put it down the disposal side first, then the other drain. You could also check the trap to see if something is stuck down there if it doesn't work. Just make sure you have a pail to catch all the water that is in the sinks when you start to loosen the pipes. I ended up with a really stubborn clog once. A plumber friend brought over his huge professional snake and from what he could feel, the clog was way down the pipes in the basement, almost out of the house. Our sink drain pipe runs down by the wall in the basement and has an access port. He used it to make sure he was going down the right pipe. He was really impressed at how clean the pipe was, and said he was going to start doing this for all his drains and recommend a few of his clients use it also. I hope this helps you Mary Ann!

Pour dawn into commode onto whatever mess you have in the toilet....(you will notice the Dawn automatically goes toward the opening you want declogged....wait about 30 min....flush. If that didn't quite do the job repeat. Have NEVER had to call a plumber with this trick. A short explanation: Dawn sinks to the clogged area and with time, permeates the mess making it 'slippery' and it 'slips' through. I use this when plunger doesn't work.

If it is your toilet that is plugged take a large bucket-3-5 gallons and dump it rapidly into the toilet bowel drain, that will get it to empty. I have done this many times, when the plunger does not work well.
