s assuming your asking about replacing soon. Not necessarily. Tanks usually last for years, at least out do.
Once a year, we drain the tank - flush the mineral deposits & sediment out of it. If electric, check to elements. They tend to get calcium & mineral deposits on the. By removing the elements & cleaning them of those deposits, you can keep them more energy efficient & working for a much longer time. If water heater is electric & stops heating the water & tank is not leaking, replace the elements & your tank will likely last yet a very long time.
If unit is gas. Flush tank as described above & it'll likely last much longer too.
