Plumbing fixtures have been standardized for over 30 years, I change my shower fixture a few months ago that I installed about 20 years ago, the new one fit in place of the old one with no problem, The only issue you could have is how it was plumb back then . some plumbers use to solder the fixtures, some just used the fittings that came with it. Also if you change style of fixture, example: from a two handle to a single the you will have to modify the pluming to fit .

Thank you for your response, I'm a "girl" so therefore I don't know what I'm doing and any "handy man" certainly knows more than myself. (sarcasim) I knew it was a load of crap!

Srrock101 is right that it should be able to be changed, as 18 years is not that old, but it really depends on what the styles are.

If you posted a picture of your present set up, and a picture of the new shower fixtures that you are wanting to replace it with, we could see exactly what you have to work with, and then would be able to give answers that are specific to your situation.

I currently have a single cold to hot faucet, with shower head, and replacing it with the same, just different finish on the hardware. IT's probably so easy that they wanted to charge for additional time. Oh well, I moved on to look for someone else. Thank you so much for the information, I appreciate it.

Eighteen years is nothing for a house. Someone sounds like they are covering up the fact that they don't know what they are doing. I've seen 50 year old plumbing fixtures changed out. I would recommend using someone else
