Shorten a chain purse strap

I have a purse strap that is leather on the top half with chain for the rest of the strap. It's too long and i want to shorten it on both sides. Any advice.

You cut through some of the chain links with strong wire cutters or a hack saw blade and remove equal amounts on both sides.
If the links are very strong, you might want to use a metal cutting blade.
Just open up the chain links and remove some from both sides and close back up.
