Shorten a chain purse strap

I have a purse strap that is leather on the top half with chain for the rest of the strap. It's too long and i want to shorten it on both sides. Any advice.

You cut through some of the chain links with strong wire cutters or a hack saw blade and remove equal amounts on both sides.

If the links are very strong, you might want to use a metal cutting blade.

Hi Norma: Get a pair of pliars and look at the link. You will see where the links open, or are joined together. Just above or below that put the pliars on the link and twist. You may need 2 pairs of pliers or one pair of pliars and a screw driver to put through the link if it is really strong. Twist in opposite directions and it should open. Remove as many links as you want to, being sure to remove the same amount of links on both sides of the strap. Then, open another link, above or below this link, just enough to put the link that is closed through the opening and close it back securely. Should take about 5 minutes:) Good luck

Depends on the purse. I've never seen them welded on anything less than something like a Coach

Oh Norma, they should open! You probably can't see where they come together, it's so tiny. They are just oval shaped circles squished together and, unless they are welded, should just come apart as stated above. Look closely, you'll see it:) If there are, say for example, 5 links, and you want to remove 2 of them, remove links 2 and 3 and attach link 1 to link 4 as stated above. Do this on both sides. Always leave the first and last links intact so you won't have to attach them to something else. Give it a good stare and see if you can see where the link comes together. Good luck

Thankyou Betsy for all your help. I will check the chain strap and go from there. Happy Halloween to you.

You too, Norma. I think you will find that there is a place where the links come together, unless it's a very expensive purse, then it's welded. The other thing you could do would be to take the purse to a shoe maker, have him cut the strap off and put a latch on it and punch holes, like a belt, so you can shorten it as much as you want. He should also sew the ends and probably put a cap on the one end that you shorten. The other end he would sew on. Good luck

Just open up the chain links and remove some from both sides and close back up.
