It sounds like your furry friend has a lot of pent up energy. Maybe try giving him an opportunity to let it out by creating more play time for him outside.

When does the dog that? When he is home alone? Is it the outdoor?

Does he want to go out : if there is no problem with the enclosed garden : make a doggie door in your door. If the door is giving out on the street : try some repellent for dogs on the door, keep the dog in another room or post someone behind that door and when that someone hears the dog's scratching, let him/her blow a horn (whatever noise that makes the dog scared when he scratches).

Stopping this behavior is difficult. Puppies need lots of toys to divert their attention...and someone to throw the toys around to draw their attention from the door. The bad news is they just have to grow out of this stage. Pups love old small rags to drag around!

Dogs have to be put in a kennel when you leave the house until you know you can trust them.

Some breeds just never learn. Some learn their lessons very quickly. Learn about your breed.

You can buy metal plates to fit at the bottom of doors.

We had a problem with the wet nose making our metal outside door rust. Hubs cut plexiglass to fit and screwed it to the door! That would work for chewing too!

IF ALL ELSE FAILS. There is one last resort, declaw front paws, there is a new lazer surgery that they carefully go in and only remove the claw itself, not the whole tip. Then they have a healing lazer that after a few treatments it heals very quickly.

I use a little pepper sprinkled around area I dont want neighbor dogs to damage. They liked to use my yard as their bathroom, especially my plants all along the front of my house. That stopped the mess as they remembered it was unpleasant to come to my flower beds. You will have to redo after a rain. Maybe a little pepper around the bottom of your door would give you the same results. Most animals like to sniff before doing anything.

I also used a little pepper in my front porch potted plants when I noticed some digging around the edge of plants. So works on cats and squirrels too.

Are you saying he claws through wood? or screen? If wood then maybe sheet metal like brass or copper or even tin. If screen then get Hardware cloth. It is very strong 1/2" mesh that comes in a roll. We have used it on screen doors and our two large dogs haven't gotten through it yet. We made it higher than they could jump. It might even work over wood.

Here is an example but it comes in different widths.

Cut up hot peppers and mix them in a spray bottle with water and use that every place you don't want the dog to visit or destroy. Best of luck.

We have four dogs and the only time they scratch at a door is if we lock them in the dining room/backroom when we have company, as they are very people friendly and two of them are about 100 pounds. We put a doggy door in the back door that is weather friendly and they don't have to wait to get out when they want to hang out in the back yard or do their duty. Even the 10 pounder can get in and out of the door without a problem and she is about 14 years old and not as spry as she used to be. See if something like that would work, it might just be the solution.
