By "open" do you mean no risers? And what would you think needs to be done? What problem are you trying to solve?
Laminate flooring works better
Hi Ann. You sure can use wood. You would lay the wood on the stair tread and the riser. Then they sell special pieces that would go on the edge of the tread and wrap around to the riser, or some thread pieces come with this already attached. It is called stair nose molding. Good Luck!
