You can add carpeted stair treads.
if you're painting mix silica sand in with the paint in this will give you grip. If you're staining then when applying polyurethane or polycrylic apply one coat sprinkle silica sand and allowed to dry. After it dries paint another layer of the polyurethane or polycrylic.

I have used sand (silica) just as Tammy recommended. You can use tinted or clear
