You can add crushed walnut shells to the paint. The shells will absorb the paint and adhere nicely. Don't be tempted to use sand instead as wear and tear will expose the sand.
Without spending money on demolition and rebuilding, try using white paint to give the appearance of a taller/wider space. You can also use reflective paint or mirrors on the ceiling to increase the reflection of light.
