Particle board, approx 3'x4', goes into the coat closet, as well. It was carpeted. Carpet on the steps also removed, and hardwood stairs need finished. (just end of each stair is finished as the carpet did not go to the very edge).

    Hi Cbenko622,

There are several things you could do, depending on the look you want. Some ideas include, ceramic, vinyl or stone tile. Another idea would be to cover it with wood board and stain it to match your stairs. You could also install laminate or engineered wood boards. I hope one of these ideas inspires you to find the perfect look for your home. Wishing you the best.

Well, you will need to try and match the wood as best you can, i.e., White Oak Oak, Red Oak, pine, etc. You may have to bring home some samples of wood to see what is on the stairs. Many times buildings will just put pine boards as stairs.

Sand down that which has been stained and then stain the entire set of steps and landing.

I would love to redo my stairs, but we "elderly" are advised to keep carpet because of safer against falls...and less damage in falls.

Whatever you do, do not paint your steps white! They look nasty very quickly.

I painted my steps black and they are dust magnets. What I do like is the LVP or luxury vinyl plank floor floating floor installed in foyer and closet. No floor prep needed and its smooth rubber surface is very durable. Whatever you choose Good luck!
