cd/dvd racks...I just read a neat idea for repurposing them.

3po3 on Aug 19, 2012I'm not willing to give up the CDs yet, so my 1,000 CDs are still in their racks on the office wall. However, I know someone who used a small wire CD rack to stand up and sort all her tupperware lids, which are always a mess and a source of frustration for me.Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Aug 19, 2012Hahahahaha ...And am I supposed to not guess who this mysterious person is? Anyway, what a good idea..I can see these used like this, and as the shoe bag thread mentioned, for spices, envelopes of small stuff..socks,yup, I like this. So...when do you have time to listen to 1000 cd's, making how many songs? How far back do they go? I just got myself an mp3 player to use on the treadmill at cardiac rehab, but most of my cd's are still in cd form. I have a few on my computer, the bummer is, my car cd player wont play mp3 cd's..so I cant condense any. And I really dont know how to use the mp3 player. Do you know if you want instructions you have to DOWNLOAD them? huh? So when i get to cardiac rehab, (which has pretty much fallen by the wayside lately), I have to hope what ever I have on the player is o k, because the old foggeys(sp) there know less than I do about this stuff! If you see this mysterious person, tell her I said ...good idea!Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Aug 20, 2012Well , the link is hgtv message board, but there were not any pictures of the use, just 3 cd towers in a garage, but posters had ideas. So in my mind , what our thread said about shoebags , a lot could apply to cd towers, either hung or sitting up. I do like the mysterious woman's idea of cd tower for lids etc, Wonder who she is? 3po3 on Aug 20, 2012Ha. Bernice, the Tupperware idea really was from a random acquaintance. it was a friend of a friend. I just happened to be in her house one day and saw it. And I won't pretend I listen to every CD in my collection every week, but I do always have music on, and it's a pretty wide variety. I started collecting them back in high school in the early 90s, but the oldest recordings I have are probably some Woody Guthrie stuff from back in the 30s. I love Woody, and was so excited to see all the hoopla about his 100th birthday this year. I also spent a lot of time uploading all my music to a hard drive, then an 80-gig iPod a few years ago, but I still end up listening more to CDs, because I think the MP3s sound like garbage (of course CDs sound like garbage compared to LPs, but I don't have a record player right now).Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Aug 20, 2012Awwww steve, you ruined my fantasy...a random acquaintance.....but her tupperware bothered you? haha oh well. Do you have any Everly brothers? Harry Belafonte? I drove my parents crazy with dayo daaaaayoooo , they got me a hifi one day and 3 ,only, records, for days Elvis and Harry and the Everly Brothers..just sang and sang..i didnt have my own room so I was in the living room, and an 1100 sq ft house...thinking back, how did they do it. Finally I ran out of gas! I guess I dont know who Woody is or what he sang. How about Johnny Ray, the Little Cloud that cried? I was about 10 then, I was with a foster family in Colchester Connecticut, and the Saturday music on the radio was polkas! But they did like Johnny Ray ! haHelpful Reply

3po3 on Aug 20, 2012Haha. I must have totally misspoken in my earlier comment. I didn't care about her tupperware. I just noticed when she went to give away some leftovers that she had used a CD rack for the lids for her tupperware. And I don't have any Everly Brothers or Harry Belafonte. I admit there is about a 30-year gap between my Depression-era recordings of Woody Guthrie and Robert Johnson and the late 60s stuff from the Beatles, Cream, etc. I've heard of Johhny Ray, but don't have any of his stuff. And Woody Guthrie wrote and recorded the original "This Land is Your Land": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaI5IRuS2aEHelpful Reply

Z on Aug 21, 2012LOL Steve, I somehow missed your last comment. That is funny. My Mom was a big music lover so I too have a wide range of likes though mine spans the gap in yours. A couple examples would be the Andrews Sisters from the 40s, Nat King Cole from the 50s. Ofcourse there's Elvis and so many more. Though I don't have all of my favorites on CDs or even albums, I do have them on You Tube. I love that site.Helpful Reply

3po3 on Aug 21, 2012I forgot about my Elvis and early Dylan. The gap is a little smaller than I thought. Have you discovered Spotify or Pandora? Other great music resources that are a little less hit-or-miss than YouTube.Helpful Reply

3po3 on Aug 22, 2012I highly recommend Spotify, if only because I can't use it anymore. I have a Mac with a really old operating system, which I am too cheap to upgrade, and Spotify isn't compatible with the OS anymore. Booo. But seriously, it's a cool service. Basically, for the cost of putting up with occasional ads, you can listen to almost anything you can think of.Helpful Reply

Ellen H on Nov 21, 2012I still have 3 boxes of LPs in the basement along with a turntable I never hooked up. I think I am finally ready to get rid of the cassettes but not my CDs, although I hardly ever listen to them anymore except in the car or when I get a particular song on my mind. Just bought a CD of Neil Diamond Live at the Greek at BAM last week - the bargain oldies bin. It's time to get the Christmas CDs out now - I've got good ones - Peter, Paul and Mary, Jim Reeves, Kathleen Battle, Sarah McLaughlin (sp?), Bing Crosby - how's that for variety? Can't jump on the music technology bandwagon until I catch up to it and that's unlikely - I don't have kids and grandkids to learn from.Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Nov 21, 2012HI @Ellen H I know what you mean, if you need help ask a kid. A friend just sent one of those photo digital things for our anniversary, said to put the memory card in, and it will keep showing pictures. well, I dont have pictures on any memory cards, i erase them all when i put them on the computer. so i guess i am supposed to now put them back on somehow? When you are finally done with the not so useful lp's, not talking about the valuable ones someone will buy, I have seen them turned into lovely bowls, I guess youi would call it. Evidently you put them in the oven until they curl up on the ends, I think you put something in the middle to keep that from curling. They look like fFLOWERS! ha Then you could put them on a pvc pipe and stick them in the ground...or sell them and make piles and piles of money. Or, maybe not! Anyway there are collectors for old lp's out there. Craigs list maybe.I still have some Smothers Brothers on lp, although I did have them put on cassette, now i have to have them put on cd, then....what? good gravy!Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Dec 14, 2012@Z I just went to that site...there is LOTS of information , wow! I could spend all day there. Thanks!! If I watch 2 or 3 similar vodeos of the same thing I might not be so nervous doing it for real! But first I need to remove pictures from the sd card...hmmmOne of the clips showed dragging pictures from library tothe sd card, which is what I would have to do.I t is interesting that she gave me this digital picture thingy, but i understand I can do a slide show on my computer also, which is also in the living room.Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Dec 14, 2012@Sharron W @ Have you ever listened to the Smothers brothers just singing? For me, that is enjoyable, I can understand the words, the music is not loud and doesnt hurt my ears...I saw them recently in a concert here..they are still funny! A little more dignified, and still drew a big crowd! @Ellen H @Z Ironic, I am still looking for a cd tower that Ican use in the bathroom! Now that I know what to do with it, do you think I can find one? It is like--- ok, we know Bernice is looking for one, lets buy them all up so she can't do a simple Hometalk task! sheesh! Maybe when I am not interested anymore, I will run into piles of them.Helpful Reply
