I love those! i have made bookends. I painted mine, but u can dress them up any way u like. I do not they can be used for really big or heavy books, but certainly for paperbacks.
If you want to use them for heavy books fill with concrete, then paint and decorate how ever you want,. After you fill with concrete you could put some flat marbles.
I always collected egg cartons; there are so many different styles. I used only the bottom part, glued them to a piece of wood (whatever size you want), painted them white on a white background, framed, it became a very interesting piece of art, especially on a dark wall. I made a smaller one for the kitchen - stuck one red wooden egg into one slot.
There are so many great shapes like that - many lend themselves to creating art, not just by painting them different colors, but attaching/gluing beads, feathers, other "found" objects.
Use your imagination.
When I look at them I see small individual shelves to be hung on a wall in a staggered pattern grouping.
Glue them to a board paint carton boxes. Use them to hold knick knicks, spice rack?

I got a bunch of these when the school I work at got new Ipads. So I used them for kid projects. We used them to make a gingerbread house for a village. You could Use them for a fairy house too. Another project I did was to make faux cukoo Clocks with them. Last I made a slit in the center( length wise) and added a framed card and decorated the triangle base with a theme to match. Art Deco worked great because of the angled shape. If I find the pictures I'll post them so you can have a visual
