How to make a lamp out of an old porch post piece?

Take a look at this blogger's lamp (part way down the page), Diane. I think it might be what you want to do:

You can find them at hardware stores, too. You'd just need to run the cord through your porch post and then plug it in. I'm assuming you have a hollow post. If not, you'd have to drill a hole through it first.
