I would suggest covering any upholstery with weather resistant fabric. Sounds like this is going to be awesome!
If you want a bench, strip everything from the couch. Raise the legs to seat height. Use slatted boards, cut the length of the "bench" and nail them to the frame. Paint and you're done.
