If your curtains aren't too heavy, butterfly screws work really well. Just be careful to not over-torque. You should be able to feel its tightness.

You can use a 1" x 2" or 4" board that is the length of your curtain rod or a little bit longer. You can paint the board to match the wall you are placing it on. You would screw the board into the studs where the curtain rod will be placed. This way you will be screwing the curtain brackets into wood instead of sheetrock. Once you hang the curtains the board won't be noticeable and your curtain rod will be secure. I have been doing that for years.
If you have a window sill that is at least 2" wide, you can use tension rods. Here are some examples.
