Are you talking about the old spring loaded roll up shades? Have you tried to take it down and roll it up the reinstall it to see if the spring still works? If you can use the old shade for a patterns and replace the shade with your new fabric if you feel you can get it on the dowel squarely.. You can replicate the fastener that the original used.. staples or glue, to adhere the new fabric. If the spring mechanism is broken you can try to replace that too.. steal one from a new working shade. Of you can make roman shades pretty easily. there are lots of tutorials on line. Good luck.

Save yourself some time and aggravation, and buy a Levlor, or Bali cordless shade, which if you look at the side it is honeycomb pleats. Get one with the solar panel, which keeps out heat in the summer and cold in the winter.
