I'm redoing my kitchen. Are valances out of style?

I was just wondering if valances are out dated for kitchens. I have traditional/country taste and I'm having a hard time finding something for my bay window in my kitchen.

My opinion is... You can bring anything back. If you like it, & can make it look fresh & new, it's IN style. But then again, I wish bell bottoms never went out. :/ ?

I believe the style that works has a flat, facing panel with one fabric, and a pleat, separating the panels of a different fabric.

I have always had valances on our kitchen windows. They 'dress' a window without cutting the natural light. Just made two new ones for our kitchen double window and added trims to accent our farmhouse style. Valances are easily made if you sew at all and you can then select the colors and patterns YOU want in your home. Depending on the size of the window a pair of valances for a single yard of fabric. I don't rely on what is trendy, I go for what I like in my home - it makes your house, YOUR home.

I love Valances but I was recently told by a clerk at Sears; that they don't carry them anymore
Because they are ' OUT OF STYLE!' I wanted to say ' Not for me they aren't!' It's the same with 
table runners. I can't find them either. 😩

I don't think its a matter of the valances being out of style. I think it is more that they are harder to find as many homeowners have with to roman shades etc.If that is your style then use them.

actually, table runners make decent valances. there are curtain rings that have clips on them...just clip the fabric/ valance to the rings, slide onto a more decorative rod. i personally like just the bottom of my kitchen window covered, the top panes left bare with just a smaller valance. i can see what's happening in the yard ...

I have always lived by this rule ' who cares if it's in style or not' you are the one who is living in the home! So live free of fads and be happy....the only reason styles change is so money can be spent....I never worry about what others think of my decor, and I am always complimented on my home. I in fact tend to go opposite the trends , right now blue and brown are finally starting to fade out and grey seems to be popular..... All so boring to me....anyway put up your valances and be happy!

I don't think that valances will ever go out of style, their styles will just change with the times. I actually make valances and window treatments for a living and business has never been better! I specialize in Hidden Rod Pocket valances that install using continental curtain rods but look like they are mounted on boards instead. Here are a few examples:

Personally I'm not a fan of valances but if a customer wants them, I'll do them. :-) Doshi Witcher has shown some very beautiful valances. I suppose the thing I dislike about many valances is that they're often too narrow. Doshi's valances are beautifully scaled to fit each window she's done. Well done! I do like these :-D

In your dining area I would mount them up to the ceiling so as not to cover any of the window (and sunshine). For your kitchen window, you already have a built in wooden valance so I'd not add any fabric valance to it.

My objection to valances is that they obscure light and bring the eye down so a beautiful tall window is suddenly cut off short. Also, in the kitchen over the sink all the steam and air born grease particles really make for a dirt trap. If you're style is country and tradition, how about shutters

I like to use JUST  a valance sometimes to add a bit of color and style while also letting in light.  Decorate to your taste and likes you are the one that sees it the most

It's YOUR kitchen. If you like valances then use them , after all you are the one that's going to be looking  at them everyday. I personally don't think that valances ever go out of style you can always add a little something new and change it up and still make it look up to date. Go with what you like.
