Can you paint laminate cabinets?

I have a friend that wants to paint her cabinets. Have you tried this? Do you know if this is possible?

Rhoda V: Yes, definitely! Zinsser has a shellac-based primer that will stick to anything and it is very durable as a primer. It does stink though!

Do any of you have a black front door? If so...do you love it/hate it?

Our front door has been white w/yellow panels for almost 9 years. I keep seeing pics online of these classy looking, black front doors. Any input?

Rhoda V: Hi, black is definitely a classic for a front door and I have black on the outside of mine & plan to keep it that way. On the inside of my small foyer, I painted it a bright color to go with my inside decor and that has been a fun little surprise.

Rhoda V: I would paint that oak kitchen in a heartbeat! It would give it a fresh new look and white is always a classic. So many paint colors you can put with it on the walls, with rugs,window treatments, accessories to brighten up & make that a really special kitchen. Builders used oak cabinets for the last 25 or 30 years and oak is nothing special on its own. Paint them!

Rhoda V: I just finished painting similar paneling in my den & just painting it makes a huge difference. I'd prime and paint it a pretty shade of whatever she likes and paint the trim white. Just painting that paneling will give it a cottage feel.

Rhoda V: Love the green, but I'm a green lover myself. If she wants to punch it up, use a high contrast color on that cabinet.

Painting Spindles Black?

Does anyone ever paint their spindles black? Would it be a bad idea? Look tacky? Please give input! Thx!!

Rhoda V: I've seen spindles painted black and it does look great. Also, another option is to leave the spindles white and paint the railing black. My sister did that and it looks fantastic.

Rhoda V: HI, Lorrie, I think panels would look nice on your windows and you could do a pretty stencil on them in a darker blue that would tie in with your current bedding. I think a pretty striped rug would help to tie in those coastal colors too, so look for something that draws your eye. I would do a creamy neutral on the walls, like Sand Beach by Sherwin Williams or the soft gray/blues that are so popular now. Oyster Bay & Sea Salt are both great colors from Sherwin Williams & are on the same strip with Comfort Gray, all 3 good colors. If you stay neutral on the walls and bedding, you will need to bring in some color with pillows. You could add a punch of color (green or coral) to add some color to the bedding. Artwork will also bring in color and add lots of fun to your room. It's a pretty room and has lots of potential.

Rhoda V: I agree, time to take down the heavy swaggy drapes. It will feel 10 lbs. lighter when you do. If you don't need a shower curtain there, just leave it all open and this will be step one of updating your bathroom. There are many ways to add updates to a bath, including new paint on the walls, painting an outdated vanity, new rug, towels and artwork on the walls.

I'm either looking for a video or an accompanied by pictures how to hang bead board wallpaper. My biggest concern is working in the corners -- both inner and outer.

Rhoda V: Steven, take a look at what I did in my former house when I ripped the carpet off the stairs. The wood was nice & solid, but not meant to be shown, but I made it work by painting the stairs & risers & adding molding too, as well as a jute runner. I loved them!
