KMS Woodworks on Dec 18, 2011Bill as I mentioned in the other thread the best starter router in most woodworking camps is the porter cable 690... As a custom furniture maker for 30 + odd years , "fancy" doors in many cases are made using larger router bits that are used in a "router table" environment. These are driven by much bigger routers like the 7518 ..this is a variable speed router That puts out 3 1/4 horse power...the smaller 690 by comparison is only 1.5 HP. The big panel raising bits must be used in a table environment, they are not safe in the small handheld units. a bit that big, spinning at 1000's of rpm has a ton of torque. Fancy edge profiles like ogee can be done using the 690 and hand held machinesHelpful Reply
