What have you tried? Pressure washing and scraping would be my first ideas then sanding.
Hello Renee! Yes...removing deckover products is a horrible chore. Pressure washing and sanding are about your only options unless you want to consider paint stripper which wouldn't be good for any surrounding vegetation. I sanded with a belt sander starting with coarse sandpaper and then changed to finer grit as the paint came off. You may not get all of the deck over out of cracks and crevices. It is a dirty, dusty, back breaking, sore muscles work hard over several days to a week to get down to the wood and prepare your deck for another finish. I will NEVER use a paint like product on my decks again!!
I used the Bher deckover on my wood deck also about 4 years ago, it is peeling and cracking all over, to bad such a good paint product can come up with a very very bad one, I have not tried to remove mine, just hate looking at it everyday.
So glad I saw this! I was going to post a question about this very type product. Guess we'll stick with staining. Even though it seems like we have to restain every year, at least it's not the major headache this product seems to be!
Behr deck restore is the worst product ever. They now make a another Behr product to remove it . My advice is if the first product was so bad why would I send more money from the same company to supposedly fix . They should offer it free to unsatisfied customers . I’ll never buy another Behr product !!!
I would rent a large sander with coarse grit sandpaper pads. Home Depot rents equipment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Li3-hToyZNw
I'm currently struggling to remove my peeling Deckover. Paint stripper did not work. I also had only limited success with a belt sander. The best method I've found is an angle grinder with a "gator" brand sanding disk. These things are VERY tough - not like paper and velcro sanding discs. That said, it is long, hard work that is killing my back. Deckover was a great idea that ended up sucking in multiple ways. I'll be glad when it's gone!
Behr deckover is a horrible product, previous homeowners put in on our deck right before we purchased, didn't even last 5 months before it started peeling. Power washer, drum sander rental, angle grinder and orbital sander. Tough labor. Go with Ben Moore Arbor Coat or sikkens for a solid stain.
Just wanted to add that I found something simple that works! A steam iron! Yup ironing the deck. I place it for several minutes with a paper towel under it until the paint softens and then scrape. Make sure you keep the steam full. Worked better than a heat gun and safer. Just using this on particularly stuck pieces because it would take forever to do my 200 square foot deck. Almost there...
Try a leaf blower and dabbing on new Deckover weekly to cover any bare spots. It is acceptable looking and takes a lot less time. My deck is half shaded, and half in the hottest sunlight. It's only the hot sunlight side that peels and chips!
