Is making a door jamb THAT difficult?
-
Dan's of Central Florida, Inc. on Jan 14, 2012Yvonne, if your husband (or yourself) is not a handy person, I would either go with a pre-hung, or have the custom jamb done by a professional. If things are not just right and square, the doors will not open/close properly. Also, cutting out for the hinges can be difficult without the right tools.Helpful Reply

3po3 on Jan 14, 2012Not to get personal, but this sounds like a recipe for marital disaster and annoying structural problems. I also suggest going pro for this job.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Jan 15, 2012The build of the jamb is not overly hard as it normally is only comprised of three main boards...left, right and top. These could simply be cut to size and screwed together...most commercial jams are just stapled. Where the "skill" comes in is installing plumb and true, and then getting the hinge mortises in the right place and done properly. The overall "size" of the assembly will need to be designed around the actual doors you have...which can also be tough to dial in.Helpful Reply

Ricardo B on Jan 15, 2012I did a DIY project once and once only and managed to ruin a door, the existing opening and frayed my wits! Next time, we bought it all pre-hung! It's still a time-consuming task for this to be done as referenced by KMS Woodworks! For my money, time and effort... Have it done and save a marriage, your time, your money and your dignity; REALLY!Helpful Reply
