I am painting my kitchen cabinets, is this a good idea?

Susan B on Jan 15, 2012Sure, we just did ours. You have to read and do the proper prep work including priming. Use only paints for cabinets for durability...and expect to pay a bit more than wall paints. You have to take the doors off and maybe the gliders from drawers. Be sure and lightly sand between coats to get a smooth final finish. All said...take out a bank loan and have new ones put in! lol, teasing..Lot of work so be prepared...you cannot hurry this project if you want great looking cabinets. Tomorrow I have to work on two base cabinets. Once again, use only paint for cabinets!Helpful Reply

3po3 on Jan 15, 2012Susan's right. Remove all the hardware, doors, etc., to ensure even coverage. Also, thoroughly clean and sand the cabinets before you start, and use a good primer.Helpful Reply

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Jan 16, 2012Before you do any sanding. Kitchen cabinets have lots of grease on them. Even if you were real good at keeping them clean. You need to wash them down real well with TSP or a good grease cleaner. Then you can sand. If you sand the cabinets with the oily grease from cooking on them the grease will work into the sanding scratches and make the paint job difficult to properly finish. AS Susan said. Its all about the prep and taking the time to do this right.Helpful Reply

Designs by BSB on Jan 16, 2012Good idea, with above considerations. Also do your research about how to treat your existing cabinets. Regular primer won't cut it. Sherwin Williams makes some primers on pre-existing finishes, so you may not need to sand everything down. S and W Kitchens, Inc. on Jan 16, 2012No one has asked yet...so I will...what is the current door made of...if the answer is laminate...please do not paint unless you are a professional. Consider refacing or perhaps replacing...if you are also replacing your counter tops, you may want to bite the bullet and replace while you are going through the renovation...good luck!Helpful Reply
