My wife and I have this wooden deck bench that the previous owners built. I've been looking for cushions online, but can't find anything to match the dimensions. Can anyone help? It is 83 inches long, 15 inches wide from your butt to your knees and 19 inches high from your butt to your back when sitting. Thanks!

Hello Dan! There are a couple of websites out there that will make a customized cushion for you. Sunbrela is a common fabric to use and you could find a website like: www.customcushions.net to make it for you. Good luck!

Have you considered making your own? There's a lot of great tutorials out there. I found this link to be very helpful. Good luck! http://inmyownstyle.com/2010/07/how-to-make-a-no-sew-cushion-cover.html

Thank you guys for the helpful links! I will be sure to look into them

  • What about going to a boat shop? They make custom cushions for all types of boats. Plus the materials they use are normally weather proof. Just have to find one that does not charge yacht prices.

Woodbridge that's a good idea, I just wonder if I would be substituting comfort for durability with the boat cushions?

Making your own should be relatively easy...I like the bright striped one (no sew) on the link that Brandi provided, but for even more durability, I'd suggest cutting a thin piece of plywood just shy of the measurements of your bench and of course finding outdoor fabric, and outdoor foam (if there is such a thing) and then stapling the fabric etc to the plywood like you would when redoing an upholstered chair seat. you could even screw in from the bottom/underside of your bench into the plywood of the cushion to make sure it's not going to move around.

  • Dan I think the comfort should be fine. Most people are wearing bathing attire when on a boat and they tend to be quite comfortable. Not all boat cushions are plastics, there are many durable fabrics that stand up quite well in the bright sun and wet surroundings.

@Dan Kosko @Brandi has a great idea. There is also a no sew fabric tape on the market that you apply heat to (iron) to adhere the fabric together. I would also recommend an outdoor fabric wo it stands up to the elements better, and if using foam would also advice keeping out of the rain as it would take ages to dry and would likely have to be set on an edge to drain. Thanks for posting and do update us on your outcome :)

  • I've run into the same dilemma. My outdoor sofa lost it's cushion I built it around (got mouldy... oops!) and now I'm having to figure something out so I can use it this summer. The old padding consisted of much more than just foam, it had sandwiched layers of foam and some kind of cotton batting and was one incredible sit! You just can't leave it out during winter... like I did. :) I'm going to be scouring the thrift shops for something suitable... maybe even oversized pillows I can stitch together, with some enhanced stuffing perhaps...

@FunkyJunk Interiors - Donna I was having trouble replacing my loveseat cushions, for a couple of years. Went to Lowes last summer and they had some plush seat cushions that were great and not too expensive. I purchased two sets and they fit into the loveseat quite comfortable. Got some for my chairs too. It was originall a one piece cushion, but this works great as well.

There are several sites on line that you can put your dimensions into...and have cushions made for you. They're somewhat higher than ready made...but they're cool because you can get down, feather, foam....or a combination of fillers.

your local fabric store should have both foam and outdoor fabric. the foam i just purchased was 90" and you can cut it yourself. good luck!

Couldnt you use regular bed pillows? Or Body pillows? Not overly full, maybe take some filling out.

Go to JoAnns fabrics, get some outdoor fabric, don't forget out door stuffing or cushion foam for outdoors, measure & sew. Also, I have used cloth shower panels for the fabric for outdoor cushions, get them on sale, use inexpensive cushions & recover.

If it was my bench I'd just sew some! Great bench, by the way!

That looks like 2 king size pillows would fit perfectly. You could stitch up a couple covers from colorful outdoor fabric in no time.

I'm with Mary R. If you have a JoAnn's, wait for their 50% off any one item coupon! This includes their foam cut to size, and a single cut of fabric, no matter the yardage.(You will need more than one coupon) They also have soft vinyl and outdoor canvas... there are also people that redo golf carts and they have the equipment and outdoor material.... check with your local country club. or if you know anyone in a mobile home park...big business here in Fla.(golf carts I mean) As are the boat places.

They probably used deck cushions but not full bench. They used section cushions since the bench is almost 7 ft I am thinking depending on cushion size 3 to 4 across and bottom, deck cushions are heavy weight material and the new ones don't fade and are water proof they also have sturdy ties or hooks where you can adjust the height. You can also sew some just measure it double it and add a inch to each side for seams. If you don't sew there are many good teaching videos on You Tube. Make sure you get heavy duty outdoor material, color fast and waterproof (thread to).
