Condo life with stray cats. What to do...
The HOA will do nothing, saying it is up to me to capture and take to animal control. I don't want to harm or hurt the animals but would appreciate any suggestions for something to keep them away from my small section of real estate. Is there anything that I can spread, spray or place on the ground that would discourage (not harm) the cats. Thanks in advance for help. Bill

Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Apr 30, 2013Bill I would inform the local animal control officer to this issue. Or seek the advice of council to evaluate the HOA rules to see if they are supposed to to do something or not. Perhaps they have a rule not to feed strays? Most associations do not allow outside feeding of any kind.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Apr 30, 2013Your HOA is guilty in my book too. I would suggest you go that rout first...then pick up a few cans of pepper spray. Feral cats are responsible for millions of song bird deaths every year.Helpful Reply

Jen R on Apr 30, 2013There are plants that allegedly keep cats away, you may want to try some container planters - I believe lavender and lemon verbena are two. A quick internet search would probably give more options. We made a solution of onion, garlic and cayenne to spray on our property to get rid of the neighborhood skunk, that may work as well (again find with internet search). Good luck!Helpful Reply

Bill on Apr 30, 2013Animal Control will rent me a trap for $25 for 5 days then when trapped I have to put them in a box and they will come and pick them up usually within a day or two. Thats not a real good option. I am going to take a good look at the HOA rules and make sure what I was told is correct. It would be so simple if the HOA would just take a firm stand. I would like to try the onion, garlic & cayenne pepper spray but the HOA would probably try to get rid of me instead of the cats. I am going to try some of the above suggestions including the internet search. All suggestions are appreciated. Hometalk is the best!!Helpful Reply

Jen R on Apr 30, 2013@Bill We made the *recipe* in #2 on this article http://www.ehow.com/how_7716284_home-remedy-getting-rid-skunks.html and sprayed it around the perimeter of our home. After having skunks spray near the intake of our furnace, we wanted a friendly way to deter them from our property. I imagine this would deter cats as well from a porch or near your windows.Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on May 01, 2013You could try the motion triggered water spray gadget. Cats hate being sprayed by water. I think Walter Reeves has a link to it on his websiteHelpful Reply

Merry D on Jun 11, 2013l have 2 feral kittens who play every day in my lavender bed, so no, that likely won't keep them away. Neither will pellet guns or paint ball guns. My neighbor used those and the cats just came over to my house but then go use his yard as a litter box 9he leaves his cats outside 24/7, so I don't know why he complains.) Try one of the sprays, such as Jen R. recommended.Helpful Reply
