Our car carpeting is ugly, dirty!

Why do car manufacturers put grey carpeting on the floors of cars? Why not a mottled pattern so dirt and stains blend in? Our carpeting is so dirty from shoes, snow, grease etc, I am ashamed.
What do others use to clean the carpet in a vehicle?

  • We just pull them out and hose them down. Sometimes we use some dish soap/water and a scrub brush to clean them, but I imagine that any carpet cleaner type product would work as well.

Hmmm sorry I dont get it..how do you pull your floor carpet off the floor? I am not talking about the scatter carpets, but the main carpet.
  • Oh lol, I thought you were talking about floor mats sorry (guess if you don't have those then that would be a good way to stop stains or cover old stains). But yeah, carpet cleaner you would use in your house should do the trick.

In addition to the typical floor mats available at auto parts stores, there is also this type of thing, which is more durable and easier to clean: http://www.weathertech.com/product-education-center/floorliner-digitalfit/ Doesn't help clean the existing stains, but it can cover them and prevent more.

As for my two cents about cleaning - I have gray carpet, too, and even with mats they get dirty. I have a shampooer for the heavy duty cleaning (it has a smaller attachment that is perfect for upholstery and small areas like the floor of your car). First though I make a trip to the car wash and use that huge vacuum they have. It's noisy, but it gets more dirt out than my shop vac. Most often, when cleaning my car, I start with my microfiber cloth, damp, and clean as much of it as I can. Then I go back with a clean one and it usually gets the rest of it out. My car is ten years old, and the upholstery and carpet don't get cleaned that often, but, that usually works the first try. If something is really grimy and you do need to shampoo, use the same stuff you would clean your carpet with. I've also used one of those spray upholstery cleaners for a quick clean up, when I didn't have time to get out the big guns. Hope that helps!

Thanks guys, yes, I meant the floor mats, , which i do have, but seems dirt etc makes its way around them. Plus we have an Odyssey van and under the center cup holder tray thing and the next seats, it gets really dirty.Very frustrating.
  • The same folks who steam your home carpets can clean these for you. They are always looking for something to clean. Or if you have your own steam floor cleaning carpet machine your all set to go! We use our Bissel (spelling) carpet steam cleaner all the time. Both in the carpet because of our barn doggie, and in our dressing area in our horse trailer. Talk about dirty. It always rains at horse shows and forget about what were always stepping in.
