Melissa G on Feb 23, 2012What about terra cotta shingles for a more authentic look? It would make the archways make more sense. Also, vines on maybe the far right corner, growing along the wall of the house. Windowboxes and lots of plants in containers. You need to fill in the row of bushes on the right. Try very large shrubs in between the two front windows and on the far right corner, then maybe a medium one to the left of the two windows.Helpful Reply

Virtually Staging Properties, Inc on Feb 23, 2012We think going for a more sophisticated look by painting house white, slight off white or a light gray, shutters black and a grey or warm red door or can even go monochromatic - all one color. Definately filling in with more larger true green shrubs for some landscaping as suggested by Melissa would make the curb appeal more lush. Check out these pics of painted brick houses for more ideas! http://bit.ly/AmXdvCHelpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Feb 24, 2012You have a great house. I would at least paint the brick inside the porch an accent color. Go all out for the neo-med or southwestern look since the design is there. Don't be afraid to use some color. Darker trim looks nice and old world. Have fun, CharlesHelpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Feb 24, 2012Hi Brenda, how about trying something bright....like and orange-brown. We have a house in east cobb that is painted brick, not same style as yours but the colors turned out great. I'll have to get a pic to post so you can see. You can do so much with paint....you can also change to a custom shutter for a better look. Changing the roof to terra cotta tiles would be prohibitively expensive unless you have a ton of money to burn. If you went with a terra cotta colored 3-tab shingle...pay a little extra and install a zinc strip along the ridge of the roof....this will naturally kill off any mold/mildew whenever it rains and you can avoid the staining you often see on this color of shingle.Helpful Reply

EXOVATIONS on Feb 24, 2012Painting is a great inexpensive option for you here. I'm going to share a link with some of our paintig before and after photos to help you visualize just how much painting can transform the outside of your home. Some people frown upon painting brick but we have been doing it A LOT this year and it looks great! http://www.exovations.com/Product%20Portfolios/Exterior%20Painting/painting_photos.htm I would consider painting the brick gray, doing the trim in a bright white, and painting the shutters ( if you can a bright or deep red or maybe even black). Make sure the paint is designed for masonary surfaces. We use Sherwin Williams and they have several different paints that will work on brick and they also have some pre-designed colors that will help you chose your color scheme as well! Hope that helps! Good luck to you!Helpful Reply

Therese C on Feb 28, 2012possibly some gentle landscaping..nothing huge..and some well placed solar lights to wake the yard up. As far as the house itself goes, I would suggest maybe black shutters and a very red door. The house is very pretty, it just looks "lonely"...maybe some trees and flowers & a curved walkway with lighting?Helpful Reply

Brenda M on Feb 28, 2012Thanks so much for your ideas. I had thought about black shutters in lieu of the cranberry shutters. One of the beauties of brick is that it is virtually maintenance free. If I painted the brick, it would require painting again in the future. The house is 40 years old and the brick still looks great.Helpful Reply

Bonnie B on Mar 04, 2012The magical transformation will be in the landscape; I'm all in for black shutters; I would put some thought in to painting the brick because you will then have paint maintenance issues; it looks like the porch inside the brick arches is already a lighter color which I like because it is noticeable, welcoming and not a dark "hole"; the tile roof idea is great, but expensive, if not needed. Paint your shutters and investigate landscapers and I think you will end up very satisfied ~ ! Keep posting....Helpful Reply

Bonnie B on Mar 04, 2012Secondary thoughts ~~~ While just outside enjoying the warm temperature this day will bring ~~ like 74 degrees ~~ Yea! I had a couple of ideas. Enhance the arches by painting only the surrounding brick or perhaps have a veneer of some sort of stone applied. Is the interior porch brick also? If so, an idea might be to apply stucco in an interesting pattern. Also, you might think of painting the round vent above the two windows on the right black, if you do paint the shutters black.Helpful Reply

Martine Resnick @ Martine Louise Design on Mar 04, 2012maybe think about painting the house gray - a more modern neutral. I'd go for an earthy medium gray (vs. a cool / light gray). Also paint the window frames black, they just blend in right now. The black is classic but also has a modern feel, they will really pop. Also do some landscaping around the front, fill in some of the gaps with some low shrubbery. good luck!!Helpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Mar 04, 2012I like Bonnie's idea of painting the arch surround course of brick. On our house, I painted the brick sills under all the windows an accent.Helpful Reply

Penny on Mar 04, 2012I'm not sure about the black shutters with your brown roof. Changing your trim (eaves and shutters) to a much lighter color than the brick would make everything stand out... not a bright white, but a soft white. For the shutters and door, I would go with a soft gray green or blue. Check out this link to get an idea of how it goes together: http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-your-home/color-gallery?cd=HC-125&col=HCHelpful Reply

Bonnie B on Mar 05, 2012Referring to Penny's post, I found it difficult to see the "color" of your roof which, indeed, is a major factor. Can you post a close-up of the roof so we can see the depth of its color?Helpful Reply

Bonnie B on Mar 06, 2012Hi, Brenda ~~ When I clicked on the picture it's quite small BUT it looks like a nice medium to dark, rich brown-grey color. Am I right? If so, I think black trim would look smashing ~ ! If you are still entertaining the idea of painting the "brick" you could do a paint color match to your roof and then take that color and break it down to half-strenghth or even a quarter-strength. I am sure that you are aware that "light" colors visually come forward and "dark" colors recede and add visual "weight". I hope Peace Painting replies for with past posts he's been excellent!!!Helpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Mar 06, 2012Thanks Bonnie, you are so kind. Of all our houses, I am disposed to like this one for style, size and construction. Brenda has indicated that she is not inclined to paint the brick and I understand. It's not an unattractive brick and if she did paint it, there would be an investment involved and some future maintenance, although minimal. Be that as it may, I can't help envision it in a southwestern motif, brick included (-; to make the hacienda pop! For a shutter black recommendation, Sher-Wms has a color called Tricorn Black that looks like old iron. It looks old world and is not a stark black. Thanks for letting us chime in Brenda. Chas.Helpful Reply

Mary on Dec 31, 2014The weathered antique torquoise look is very in today; perhaps painting the shutters and front door this color would brighten it up a bit and if you don't like it, hey, it's only paint!Helpful Reply
