We painted our cabinets with Nuvo, which is a paint specifically made to cover cabinets - there are no brush marks when dry and it doesn't chip/peel like regular house paint can. But I'm sure you can use pretty much any kind of paint as long as you prep appropriately. What look are you going for?

We specialize in cabinet repainting and of course there are many types of paint that can be used. The best we have found for most cabinet resurfacing projects however is a waterborne lacquer called Aqualente by M.L. Cambell. This product is very low VOC and self levels like traditional acetone based lacquer which is what most manufacturers use, giving you a superior coating without the headache and awful smell of lacquer.

I personally would not use chalk paint for kitchen cabinets. There are quite a few negatives from people who paint cabinets for a living who say not to do it and it's a nightmare later on. When I painted my bathroom vanity cabinets, I used Ace Cabinet & Trim paint. It gives you a factory-finish, no brush marks, and it is self-leveling, but it takes a good week to cure and dry. But it was well worth it. Good luck on your project and make sure everything is prepped properly.

I went from light oak to cherry with a dark oak stain. It's a wonderful switch!

Your cabinets are beautiful! If you're looking to brighten the kitchen my suggestion would be the paint color, especially on the soffit, and new countertops. In my opinion those are what's dating the room and not the cabinets.
