What is the best and most comfortable flooring to put on a slab floor?
-
3po3 on Mar 15, 2012Best and most comfortable are different questions. Seems to me that carpet would be the only more comfortable option than laminate, but it would be a bad idea for a kitchen. Tile would likely be the best option, but is probably even harder than laminate. Your best bet for comfort might be some cushiony rugs or mats, like these: http://www.gelpro.com/shopHelpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Mar 16, 2012You'll want to get yourself a comfortable cushioned mat for in front of the stove or sink. You can remove & store when not in use....I have the same issue when I cook...even on hardwoods...after a bit my legs start to ache.Helpful Reply

Heather on Mar 16, 2012I like the idea of the gel mats but way too expensive with 3 kids and 3 dogs in the house. I will keep looking.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Mar 16, 2012$99 bucks for a mat = way to expensive? Not sure how the number of dogs and kids factor in. Redoing the floor in a kitchen will cost far more than that. You probably can find a cheapo Chinese made "squishy" rug at walmart for 20 bucks or less. What works for many is a decent pair of shoes...most folks wear them already and getting sensible footware goes a long long way. Having worked in retail ages ago and having neighbors that work in health care...where 10 to 12 hours of "one your feet" work is common. Shoes are the perfect first line of defense...they are portable and go wherever you go...so a mat in front of the sink or in front of the stove are both covered.Helpful Reply

Designs by BSB on Mar 16, 2012Hoping for more ideas? Steve G and KMS offered some very creditable options without the bigger cost of replacing what you already have. Slab floors are hard. Topped with a thin laminate means they are still hard. The only option outside of (economical) carpeting would be hardwood or laminate floating floor systems. What you are experiencing is one of my #1 statements to homeowners who consider tile flooring. Its hard. and it hurts!Helpful Reply

Peace Painting Co., Inc. on Mar 17, 2012Heather, have you thought about cork? Google cork for kitchens. Of it's many benefits, the wrong brand can be vulnerable to water. CPHelpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Mar 17, 2012Cork would be an option but in pretty wimpy in the durability dept. It is very susceptible to water damage...leaps and bounds more so than hardwoods...which is already a poor choice for Kitchens. Tile is and always will be the best in a kitchen...for comfort get a mat and or wear some decent shoes. http://www.hometalk.com/activity/85475 http://www.hometalk.com/activity/32123Helpful Reply

LindaK on Feb 14, 2016I thought laminate has a cushion underlay. I had to buy those gel mats for my ceramic tile kitchen which is also hard on the feet and legs.Helpful Reply
