Remodeling master bath

KMS Woodworks on Apr 23, 2012My personal "take" on hot tubs is they are great to use but I find the upkeep and operational costs to exceed the recreational benefit. To me a hot tub is an outdoor thing...relaxing with a fine wine and stars over head. A decent "soaking" tub in the bath can provide nearly the same experience without the added hassles. One of our favorite pastimes is to visit the local "natural hot springs" along the Rio Grande river near our cabin. It is a mile hike in, so not nearly as convenient as having it at "home" but that tends to make the visits there more "special" You can just see the river flowing by in the background. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kmswoodworks/6798380152/in/set-72157629132336490Helpful Reply

Rhonda M on Apr 23, 2012I like a garden tube with jets for a big bubble bath, but a hot tub belongs outside. Some people don't like them. I have arthritis and the jets in the garden tube is great, but the hot tube belongs on a deck or patio.Helpful Reply

Susan F on Apr 23, 2012I agree with Rhonda. I redid my bathroom in my last house a few years ago and put in a jetted tub. We enjoyed it immensely and it doesn't have any of the upkeep that a "hot tub" has. The only issue is that you are limited by the setting of your water heater while hot tub has an internal heater. If you're good with that, I would definitely look into the jetted tubs. I don't know just how big they come; ours was made for two. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Carroll A on Apr 23, 2012I agree with Rhonda M. a garden tub with jets is a much better idea for in a home. Another thing to think about, the amount of moisture a hot tub would put into a room would be huge. Better plan on a good venting system or you will be dealing with mold. Hot tubs don't add to the resale value much, if any. For me personally a hot tub in the master would be a negative if I was looking at the home for purchase.Helpful Reply

Clay B on Apr 23, 2012No, I would not do it, If used often, would be too much moisture and cause mildew problems, besides the noise from the hot tub, you would need a much bigger bath fan to suck out the moisture, which causes noise, and that much water sitting in there will keep it humid all the time, mildew city in the making. Bathrooms with a jetted tub ok, becaue you use it, empty it., your done. Home buyers like seeing a jetted bath tub, A hot tub would be a turn off in general. We bought a home however, came with a jetted tub. Wife used it once, that was it, in 4 years. Looks nice though. Now for installing a hot tub, if you have a deck now, don't just put in on the deck, this is another turn off for home buyers, install it off to the side of the deck, out of the way; too often I see a nice 12x16ft deck and 1/3 of it is taken up by hot tub, not good.Helpful Reply

Angela G on Apr 23, 2012I am in the process of installing a Japanese soaking tub but its still the regular length of a normal tub 5ft. I can soak up to my neck.in bubbles. The tub is in there and so far it looks great. I can't wait till it is in working order. I opted out of the whirlpool because of all the problems I heard. And the noise level. The only sound I want to hear is Beethoven's moon light sonata. I hooked up speakers so I can connect my ipod for music.I have a designated place for my ipod too. Gotta have my Beethoven. When the bath is done I will post pictures.Helpful Reply

Marcia K on Apr 23, 2012A garden tub is a definite must! (Especially if you have an on-demand heater...not a traditional one.) We use ours almost every day after working around our property. I would never build without having one again!Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Apr 24, 2012Here is a nice soaker I put in for a client a couple years ago. Jetted tubs have "cleaning" issues with the pumps jets, and lines...soap residues, dead skin cells etc...can be "germ farms" http://www.hometalk.com/Kevin/project/1151 This extra deep saoking tub uses a double wall type of construction. The space between these walls was filled with spray foam to provide extra insulation. I was informed by the HO that this allowed her to take a very long soak without the water coolingHelpful Reply
