Becky Shell on May 16, 2016I agee with Stefanie unless paint is peeling no need to remove it ,just paint over it. Being it is black if painting a lighter colar paint you might have to do 2 coats or prime then paint . Removing paint from shudders would be a big job ! Scrapping would be very time consuming and to chemically remove it is messy , costly and chemicals are very toxic . If there are rough spots give them a little sanding then paint them.Helpful Reply

861650 on May 16, 2016I have removed paint with rubbing alcohol. However, you said your shutters are painted so it may take some of the black off as well. Try it with a small cotton ball in an inconspicuous spot. I have to ask, is it just small spatters or is it a lot of paint? Having said that, here is another idea. Take one of the shutters down and go to the hardware store. Have them mix up a quart of black paint using the color on the shutter. (Some people think black is just one color.) Talk with the folks at the hardware store about your problem. This can be your back-up if something goes wrong. In addition, plastic shutters fade in time...are your shutters faded? Buy a good quality spray-on car wax or some type of spray wax that you do not have to buff. Test it at the store on the surface before buying paint. Have done this and the shutters looked brand new and lasts a long, long time.Helpful Reply

9530106 on May 16, 2016I have to agree, I would scrape the loose, if any, paint, and repaint. They do suggest online that brake fluid will remove paint from plastic. I don't think it would be worth the mess, and I have stripped many things!Helpful Reply

Kathy T. on May 16, 2016We used a hand paint sprayer for better coverage and they turned out great. Just wash first. A note though, a color on a chip will look different against siding so pick up some chips first if changing color.Helpful Reply

Violet on May 17, 2016Not sure why you feel the need to remove the paint. I have had great results by using a coat of primer and then one to two coats of paint right over the original color, even black.Helpful Reply
