Gardenia

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Jun 17, 2013I am guessing you have an August Beauty Gardenia if it is that tall. I would allow it to bloom, then after the blooms are spent go ahead and whack it back. What does the bottom part look like? Is it bare?Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Jun 18, 2013Wow that is BIG! There is a couple of ways you can go about this. The first is to give it a radical cut at about 3 ft and see if anything comes back (chance of losing the entire shrub). Or you can cut it about 3 ft down from the top of the plant, then in a year or so do it again at about 1/2 the plant height. You could also do some selective branch pruning, taking off only the ones that are falling over, but you might end up with a lopsided bush. Tough decision there.Helpful Reply

Sharon Romine on Jun 19, 2013I have three like this in my yard. I usually do trim after it quits blooming, but not every year. I love them and they could never get too big for me.Helpful Reply

Ronnie Pennington on Jun 19, 2013Trim only by 1/3 each year after it stops blooming, until it is the size you want it. Should not cut any plant back by more than 1/3.Helpful Reply
