I need deer resistant plants. Any new ideas?

I am in mtns of NC and deer are eating everything except yarrow, fox glove and evergreens. I hate to put little fences around everything that I plant but that is what I am doing now.

Cynthia, I also garden with a herd of deer on our property and deer diets truly change from region to region and season to season. The only true remedy is a 7 foor deer fence around the entire garden, but that is not always possible or practicle. A good book you might enjoy is Deerproofing Your Yard & Garden by Rhonda Hart. 2nd edition. A good solid read on this topic. Good luck!

I work at a local Big Box home improvement store and the garden center has a book with a listing of what plants are deer resistant and such that are in your area. Since those type stores have to compete with the local specialty stores they are informed each year of new plants and such. I am going to follow you to see what everyone else knows. Thank you for placing this, new plants are so nice. Have you also tried human hair at the perimeter of your yard? Someone else also suggested chunked up perfumed (strongly scented) in nylon's and tied around in trees to help discourage deer.

I live in Michigan and even "deer resistant" plants are often eat by our deer, esp. if food is scarce and they are hungry. In 12 years I've live here in deer country the deer have (not yet) bothered these plants; (herbs) cat mint, sage, oregano, (shrubs) Butterfly bushes, ornamental grasses, white daisy's and Black Eyed Susan's and White Pines. Some they eat just in the winter moths when food sources are low and this includes native Oak Leaf Hydrangeas, so we wrap those in the fall. But knowing deer, I know to never says never! I've read they do NOT like prickly/pricky plant so some resort to those. Other resort to 7 ft. tall fences. There are sprays, but I have 2 1/2 acres of garden and it rain often in MI so sprays don't seem a reasonable solution to me. Not all of these plants will work for you because the list was developed for coastal North Carolina, not the mountains, but there should be plenty that do.
