Manya Maples on Aug 01, 2013I had someone up there this evening. They may have got us fixed for the moment. Suppose to have a heavy rain the weekend, we will see. The roof is as old as the house, still has original wood shingles when they built the house. Thank you for the response. Thank you very much.Helpful Reply

Txvoodoo on Aug 02, 2013Yup, what @Anne @ DesignDreams by Anne said - this is one thing I won't DIY. We had a leak in our new house, and the water was coming in 5 feet away from where the actual shingle damage was. Worse yet, it was coming through in a light switch! Turns out, a bad storm had loosened some flashing, and we couldn't tell at ALL by looking.Helpful Reply

Sherrie on Aug 02, 2013I hate that for you! Last summer we ripped off my Dad's roof. We had 2 layers of shake shingles, and regular shingles in some places we found 2 and 3 layers of the regular shingles. It also had no decking. It was a house built in the late 1800's. Not only did we rip it off and the pitch was extremely high we had to ad more support (more rafters) before we out any decking on because back in the 1800's the roof wasn't made for decking. It was very easy to put on the roofing material. The decking and tearing off was hard and hot. We had several companies bid it for us. The bid was over $10,000. Just for the roof, not the garage or the flat roof in the back of the house. We replaced the tin roof over the garage with a metal roof for $300.00. We tore off the metal roof with a rock bar. The main roof materials were $3500.00 this includes the decking, roof material, and lumber for the new support. Even if you do the tear off yourself you can save a lot of money if you then use someone to install the rest of it. I also tore down two old chimney's. they were dangerous while the roof was off. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Manya Maples on Aug 02, 2013Thank you for all the reply's,I really appreciate the advice. We are just trying to see if this will take care of the problem. the roof has like 4 or 5 layers of shingles and wood shingles from when the house was built. Really thank you all.Helpful Reply

Judy on Aug 03, 2013That is a lot of layers of shingles which isn't good..It appears that your shingles are showing some wear...and if you happen to have any wind damage anywhere such as missing shingles your insurance may cover getting them repaired, however the laws changed after a certain date, some insurance companies will cover the whole roof and some only the damaged areas, we were fortunate enough that our insurance company covered the roofs on our house and two out buildings because of wind damage tearing the shingles off the roofs. Total bill for all 3 was over 13,000 our insurance covered over 10,000 thank God as we are living on SS.Helpful Reply

Karon Nelson Roberts on Aug 03, 2013If the roof is almost as old as the house, I think that replacing the whole roof is the best thing. You could use shingles, but I would go with a tin roof.Helpful Reply

Sherrie on Aug 03, 2013Manya I know sometimes money is tight. I had rain pouring in my house after I had just remodeled it and didn't have the money to replace it right then. I patched everything. I used a hose and someone else was in the attic marking the spots that leaked. When we re-did my Dad's roof we did half at a time. The tear off was the worse part. We couldn't have the material set on the roof because it didn't have enough support. This is if you DIY.Helpful Reply

Patricia Giuria on Aug 03, 2013Hi Manya, if you are short of money see the place and try to discover from where the water gets inside, I had the same problem and here is winter so no one can fix it till October, so we went up the roof and put poliurathane foeam, and is great inside. I am sorry for Helicopters owners that see my roof from the air, but last week I was sleeping in my rain was dropping into my sommier (mattress)Helpful Reply

Manya Maples on Aug 08, 2013Well this is still not resolved. I am not sure where to go from here. Waiting on some help as I am on SSI. So money is very tight. Having great friends helps, but waiting on them to be able to get up there is hard. And it has rained every day and no end in sight for a week. The leak is not as bad as it was, a lot was stopped, now I think what is left in 1 small spot by the ventilation at the top. Hopefully soon. Thank you all.Helpful Reply

Sherrie on Aug 08, 2013Manually there are some places that can help. Habitat for humanity is one, churches that help the elderly and disabled. And another one I will look it up and post it. I don't know exactly how far away you are from us but if it wasn't to far we wouldn't hesitate to help. I will see what other services can help and post it later.Helpful Reply
