Day lily garden

I have wonderful day lilies that line my garden but in the fall there is nothing pretty to look at. Any suggestions of what to plant next to them that will bloom in late summer early fall? I live in upstate new york. Thanks!

Full sun? to attract the birds I would have Black eyed Susans or Coneflowers which will bloom into fall plus they will reseed and fill in. Sedums~I love Autumn Joy because it has the red blooms and takes any soil conditions.

Thanks! Yes they get full sun, but I was concerned that black eyes and cones would flower at the same time as the lilies. Sedums- I am unfamiliar with and can't wait to learn more. Great ideas!

Phlox is a late bloomer and here is a link with info and pics of the autumn joy sedum. Mine have not turned color yet and they are a no maintenance plant making them perfect for most gardeners. www.finegardening.com

that is a good question. Probably put them in front if you choose to keep the straight line look. However, I would alternate front and back of daylilies and if you are going to plant more than one plant alternate them as well. The black eyed susans will reseed and in a couple years you will be giving away plants.another bonus you will be attracing Goldfinches, finches, and all kinds of birds and butterflies to your garden. do not cut seed heads because the birds will dine on the blooms. Sedum spreads as well but not as fast and stays as a plant growing larger and larger. Do not worry about being perfect on placement~remember nothing in nature is perfect or straight. Good luck

Sedum will certainly take you from summer into early fall. Phlox, coneflower and rudbeckia do generally bloom about the same time as daylilies. I would incorporate asters in the border, which will take you to a hard frost. You could also plant some later-blooming daylilies. Autumn Minaret is a stunning daylily that gets 6-feet high and bloomed into September in my Hudson Valley garden. Late-blooming monskhood (Aconitum carmichaelii ) will bloom into October.

I have Knock Out Roses behind my lilies and they bloom until frost if trimmed.

jgor - as most here suggested, the flowers in bloom now with the daylilies are phlox, coneflower, black eyed susans, also balloon flower, gladiolas, hardy hibiscus, my red and my purple bee's balm is still in bloom, annual cosmos, annual cleome...I'm actually looking out my windows to see what's in flower. Then, I'm awaiting my assorted mums to start their bloom when daylilies are done for the season.
