Info concerning removing a swirl/popcorntype ceiling design
-
KMS Woodworks on Aug 12, 2013Typical swirl designs are done with the joint compound / plaster and do not scrap off easily. Popcorn (if not painted) will scrap pretty easy. For swirls you can skim coat / sand for a smooth finish or apply a heavier "texture" like the spatter knock down. I recently worked on a Condo remodel where the ceiling had asbestos popcorn. This was the fine grained kind not the big heavy chunks. Rather than do a expensive removal mitigation project we went with a much simpler encapsulation mitigation project. Encapsulation was done with a Venetian plaster technique.Helpful Reply

William Gabbard on Aug 12, 2013This looks as though it was done with joint compound and more than likely sometime later was painted.Helpful Reply

William Gabbard on Aug 18, 2013I ended up spraying hot water on in small sections 2 ft x 3ft and it did come off with a little elbow grease. Actually it more or less came off in two layers. Caution needs to be taken not to to gouge the drywall and tear the paper which I did do in a couple spots. It wasn't a problem to repair but I would of course rather not have to.Helpful Reply
