Judy Riley on Sep 13, 2016you don't have to but please if you think it was from before 1980 or so, get it tested for asbestos before you do anyting. just put whatever you are going to use right over itHelpful Reply

Becky Miller on Sep 13, 2016I agree, cover it. But if you decide to scrape it, get ready for a big mess. I've scraped it while it's dry: tuff job. After about 10 minutes of dry scraping, I decided to spray it with water. Wow, what a difference! And it holds the dust down. Remember to cover furniture and floor with drop cloth to protect and gather the debris.Helpful Reply

Sue Harviel on Sep 13, 2016The great thing about covering your ceiling is the fact that you don't have to remove or fix anything....just cover it. As for asbestos if you cover it, it won't harm you. Asbestos is only dangerous when it becomes air borne. So by covering it you are already saving a nice chunk of cash.Helpful Reply

Dave Brown on Sep 13, 2016Check to see if its painted. If its not painted lightly spray with water and scrape into plaster tray. If painted cover it as it is much more difficult to scrape off.Helpful Reply

Ellen on Sep 13, 2016Please be careful to check for the possibility of asbestos before doing anything! Houses built in the 1970's and earlier often have asbestos in the popcorn. It is not dangerous unless it is disturbed.Helpful Reply

Deanna Nassar on Sep 13, 2016I'd have to wonder why it's falling off. Is anything leaking above this ceiling? I know a guy that had a lot of leftover paneling from a re-do on house. Nailed it to ceiling and then covered with sand paint. You use it like paint but then kind of swirl the brush to add texture/design to it.Helpful Reply

Suellen Hintz on Sep 13, 2016It depends on what you are installing, method used to do that installation, and what you think. The coverup item should mean you don't have to do removal first.Helpful Reply
