Door for 30' hallway to keep cats out

Question

I need to put something in the hallway to keep my cats from accessing the living room and kitchen when I am not home. It is only 30' wide but it needs to be taller than 5' (they are good leapers). Any ideas?

Have you considered a privacy screen? They can be made pretty inexpensively with a simple frame or bi-fold doors and hinges, and could fold up or lay flat against a wall when not in use. You could chose to mount it to one area on the wall or leave it free standing depending on how your cats are. Your options are endless on styles that would match your decor.

you can have louver doors made to specs. and they will allow air flow but keep cats out also. You can paint or stain them easily.

If you go with some kind of screen structure, you can replace the thin screening with 'pet screen'. Lowes and Home Depot carry it. It costs about $20 to replace a standard door. You will have to get smaller gauge spline to fit in the groove, as the pet screen is thicker. I have used the pet screen numerous times and the babies have never ruined it. It will not snag or tear when they grab it.

I use a pet gate (purchased at Lowes), and an electric mat.   The mat is on the dog side of the gate.  Keeps them from getting to the cat food and litter boxes.   To train the cats, I put the mat on the lowest setting and left the pet gate open.  Only one of the five was brave enough to venture out.  She didn't get far though.    None of the others have every jumped the gate.  But I think they may have tested the mat by putting their paws thru the bars.

I actually just order a pet gate, tallest I could find. I have never heard of an electric mat. Where did you find that. What a great idea!
