There is a Marine Varnish out there, made for weatherproofing boats. I'll bet this would work for you.
Your best bet is to sand the door down, and finish it with multiple coats of an exterior spar varnish that’s made for boats. Spar varnish contains ingredients that block UV rays and is more flexible than standard polyurethane, so it adheres better without cracking or peeling. Exterior polyurethane with UV blockers is also available, but it doesn’t hold up as well outside as spar varnish.

I would use an all weather out door paint especially made for this. Re garding sealing, that would depend on the type of paint used. You may how ever need to sand and apply one or two coats of primer first! Go to your local paint/ hardware store they should be able to help/guide you through this. I would suggest you take a photo of the door with you that way they will have a better idear of the condition of the door and will be better able to help you. Hope this has been useful/ helpful.
