spray paint it silver...let it dry...then use a dark brown stain and paint it on...then wipe it off...works great for me...
I use something called Metallic Lustres from DecoArt......The are rub-on metallics and look amazing.

I have also used the deco art metallic lusters on lamps and mirror frames and over a painted surface for detail. Very easy to use you do not get a mirror finish but a shiny one, works great.
