Hang cedar blocks, put a bucket of damp rid and most important make sure there are no leaks unbeknown to you.
Try using cat litter! I've heard it works wonders at getting rid of musty odor.
One of the best ways to get rid of smells is coffee grounds. I used them in a refrigerator that had been left unplugged and closed for several days in 100 degree weather with salmon rotting inside. Horrible smell. I tried a number of recommended items for getting rid of smells and ground coffee was the only thing that worked. Put some on newspaper or some container at the bottom of the closet and if you have a shelf I would put some up high as well. The most important thing you must do is find out the source of the musty smell. Did it or is it wet inside the closet and what is causing it. If you don't fix that the musty smell will come back. But the coffee grounds will definitely clear out the smell.
Take a big bowl of cat litter and put it in the closet, close it up for for several days, then change to about a cup or so of fresh coffee grounds and let that set for several days. The timing may have to be adjusted but that has worked better on almost any closed space from an old trunk to a smelly garage (needed several of the bowls then.) You can keep cat litter (cheaper clay works just as well) and/or coffee in the closet forever. Just remember to change it out when the musty smell returns.
kitty litter works great in closets, the refrigerator, fireplace, anywhere!
Fill an open container with white vinegar or baking soda. The smell will be absorbed in the vinegar or baking soda. Then just discard vinegar or baking soda after a few days. Refill open container and put back in closet. Works in musty basements too.
