I always find it helpful to ask a local nurseryman for advice because what grows in Kansas may not do well in Minnesota.
i personally wouldn't put a tree in that area. the general rule of thumb is a tree will will have 2-3 times more roots than canopy. 11x 16 ft. is not a huge area. my craft room is bigger than that. the tree may damage your foundation, your under ground pipes, electrical. et cet. check with your local master gardener, the nursery man usually wants to sell you a product. if you are wanting shade there are other options out there.
There does not seem to be enough room, however consider planting in a very large container to contain the roots.
You could use a srub that is lager, like maybe a Holly crepe merles,I hope I spell this one right. Holly can have red, black, yellow, depend on what kind you use and the other one come in diffent colors flowers. It does n't need to be a tree,is my point, there are many lager srubs that can go there ,get big, just keep in trim like a tree form! Hope this help, miss spelling and all!
A lilac bush would be a nice fit in that area. Then you could put other perriannials in the
area depending on the a of sun or shade.
Try a Japanese Maple. They come in dozens of varieties and heights/widths so you should be able to find one to fit your space.....and they're beautiful.
Check the root system of any tree that you pick because roots can rip up foundations, water pipes, sewer pipes etc.
Re: Japanese Maple tree. While very pretty this is not a good tree for such a small place. My son has one that is about 35 feet from his house and the roots have buckled his custom patio, invaded plumbing and taken over flower beds so nothing new can be planted. Sorry.
It doesn't say where you are located but if possible I would recommend a Chinese Fringe tree. They are compact, evergreen, and beautiful pink flowers. They can easily be trimmed to maintain the size for the area. Check with your local nursery for advice.
Thank you. I'm in zone 8a georgia, I will definitely research this tree
