Fall is the best time.
Michelle, my Husband splits our Hostas up in the spring, when about 6-8" of new green shoots can be seen. He just digs in his shovel inside them, then around to loosen them, and pops them out for transplanting. We've even put them in some water in a bucket and transported them to our camp 1 1/2hrs away and they are thriving beautifully! Don't you just love them? :) Although they can take over if they're not kept in check...we've even given some away! They're so forgiving, I just love them! Good luck! :)
In the spring when the shoots are sticking up like pencils before they unfold.
Spring before the leaves unfurl.
Anytime. I did them when they were fully grown and quite large. Just spread the leaves and drive a spade or shovel down the middle. I once put them in water and forgot about them and they froze over the winter. They are doing great. It is one of best plants for the garden. I have a least ten kinds. Good Luck
They can be split anytime, although it is easier in the Spring when they just start to come back up. They will grow in soil, or water. I have a pond and put them in for the Summer, (no soil needed), and take them out before Winter and stick them in the garden until Spring. If then I want to split them I can just lay the whole plant on its side and split off what I want.
Spring is the best time, but you CAN do it any time; just keep them well watered after transplanting.
