new studies are saying not to use styrofoam that it will eventually release a harmful chemical.
What a great idea. Thanks.
the pots that i have used Styrofoam in didn't do well. it functions like rocks in tn bottom holding moisture. sometimes too much moisture and the roots were not healthy.
I have tried it also, and it floated to the top and plant was waterlogged, I use cardboard and newspaper now
I have 3 square styro "boxes" that I drilled holes about 2" from bottom all around (3 on each side), filled with potting soil and grow tomatoes, onions and lettuce in them. They are great.
I use Styrofoam in the bottom half of large pots as you don't want to end up with a 50 + pound pot to try to move plus wasting all of that potting soil in the bottom half of the pot when you don't need it. If you use cardboard and paper they get water logged, deteriorate with the plantings sinking into the pot and the pot weighs a ton when the paper and cardboard is wet.
I wouldn't use it for an veggies, breaking down plastic will be a long way from organic.
i buy plastic easter eggs at the end of the retail season when they are really cheap. They can be washed when you change the soil and take up volume in the pot. You can also use plastic water bottles.
