Carpeting.
Berber style/type carpet. all the way up or halfway with a nice trim piece. Inexpensive, can be done DIY and easy to vac and clean.

you could get the same effect using textured wall paper that you can paint or stencil's . Finish with satin polyurethane.
I tiled the front of mine with tile that looks like barnwood. It looks amazing. And the tile is avail at Home Depot for cheap!
Corrugated metal sheets are quite trendy. Can even be painted. Much cheaper than buying the single tiles as shown in your photo.
