What have you tried planting? What is your planting zone? Do you want annuals, perennials?
You need to have your trees trimmed back. Best is to have it done professionally.
we have perennial geraniums which bloom in June/July. Their roots grow within fallen leaves and spread. They are scented too! We love them and have relocated them to many areas as they grow.
Do any of your neighbors grow Asiatic Jasmine ivy? I know it grows in part shade and full sun, I'm not sure about full shade. It doesn't grow up onto the bricks or trees like English ivy will do. Once it's established, it's think enough to keep weeds from growing in there. Turns reddish in the winter. Look around at neighbors' houses to see what they are using.
Try hostas. There are all different sizes and styles from small to huge and they prefer the shade. They can be very beautiful. Also sedum seems to grow just about anywhere, too.
pachysandra is perfect for these areas because it can cover theground under the bushes and prevent weeds and other things from growing, giving your foundation garden a neat look. great for this
