Use a pumice stone to get the rust off . Then I would look into a paint or clear sealant from Rustoleum to spray over it as a prevention from this happening again .

Aluminum does not rust. What you have is an insulated steel garage door. Just sand the rust down to bare metal. Be carefull the steel skin is pretty thin. Then prime the bare spots and paint. Use paint made for metal.

You might try CLR to get the rust off. or just use fine steel wool and scrub off.

I forgot to tell you, we live by the beach so the salt air gets to it. Thank for all the hints but I'm an artist and I really was looking for some crafty hints. shells, rope something like that .

Hank, you are correct. Aluminum corrodes and pits. I wouldn't call it rust. The photos show rust so it is steel..

AHA, Lee! You want something crafty!! Anything you put on the door will add weight which means the spring tension, open and closing of the door may need to be adjusted. May I suggest after you have removed the rust and painted the door something that won't require door adjustment. You can glue rope in the coves of each panel (where the rust is) outlining the panels like a frame. Then paint different beachy scenes in each panel. Or even decoupage beach scenes in each panel. It would look like a collage of beachy photos.
