The most permanent solution is controlling them while still young. Dig them up completely when you see them. Don't let them get to flowering state because once they flower, the seed will spread and give you an even bigger wild onion problem the following year On the bright side, they aren't as terrible as you might think. Onions have been know for their benefits of keeping insects at bay.
