German stucco it.
It may appear that it is too big because of the dark red brick. Maybe if it was painted or whitewashed it would blend in with the rest of the room and not appear as big.

I agree it is the red brick color. You can paint it the same color as your wall and then perhaps it will not be so obvious.
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm not sure why the rest of my question was cut off. I have thought about whitewashing it. I am trying to do something that I can do myself. I might try painting the brick the color of the wall.
My son whitewashed one just like yours. It looks great. They let a little of the brick show through so it looks very natural. You tube has a how to video.
I whitewashed my 70's red brick and it 'softened' the appearance a lot.
Whitewashing is definitely your easiest dyi option. Paint the mantle white.
I would paint it...I think all the lines of the Mortar are making it look busy. That would be the most economical option.
I would paint the brick the same color as the wall.
Thank you for your time. That is what I am thinking about. Seems to be the easiest and least expensive way.
I had a similar problem. I painted it a light color. I eventually made a wood surround that covered up some of the brick. I would paint the brass black.
That is what I was thinking. Thanks so much for your time.
